A summer school on the topic of “PAHs in extreme environment” is organized at the University Paul Sabatier, in the beautiful city of Toulouse, in the South West of France, from 24 to 28 June 2019. The scientific goal of this one week school is to provide young scientists (Masters, PhDs, and Postdocs) with key concepts and tools regarding the physics and chemistry of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in extreme environments (low density, low pressure, high temperature). The participants will be given a comprehensive introduction of several aspects, ranging from astronomical observations to experimental studies and quantum simulations. Lectures and hands-on will be given by experts in the different fields of interest. The idea is to address a limited number of topics, but in depth. The covered topics and lecturers are the following:
Astrophysical environments of PAH processing (O. Berné, Univ. Toulouse)
PAH processing in plasmas (X. Tu, Univ. Liverpool)
Formation of PAHs and soot particles in flames (Andrea d'Anna, Univ. Naples)
In-situ spectroscopic diagnosis in reactors (T. Pino, Univ. Paris XI)
PAH dissociation : synergy between experiment and theory (P. Mayer, Univ. Ottawa)
PAH energetic processing: quantum approaches and molecular dynamics (M. Rapacioli, A. Simon, Univ. Toulouse)
Characterization of Carbonaceous Molecules in Cosmic Dust Analogues and Meteorites: the AROMA set-up (H. Sabbah, Univ. Toulouse)
This summer school is part of the H2020 Innovative Training Network (ITN) “Extensive and Ubiquitous Role of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Space“, in which University of Toulouse (IRAP and LCAR/LCPQ) is involved, together with 8 other beneficiaries and 6 partner organisations in Europe. The EUROPAH Network aims at training 16 ESRs on the topics of the physics and chemistry of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their role in space.
The school follows on follows on a first event organized in 2018 in Les Houches (http://pahschool2018.strw.leidenuniv.nl/). It is opened to students outside the EUROPAH network, and in total we expect to have 30-35 attendees. Application deadline is May 1st 2019 (see Registration section), with strong encouragement to present a poster in relation with the research topics. The abstracts can be submitted in the "Abstract/Poster" section. There are possibilities of financial support for students with limited funding resources, that must be requested upon registration sending an email to europah-school@sciencesconf.org
